The Anatomy of a Skateboard Wheel

To the beginner, the humble skateboard wheel might just seem to be a simple part with not much to it, but to a pro, skateboard wheels can vary, from their hardness, durability, and size. So, let’s look at specifications of a skateboard wheel and what can make them unique, which are best for your skateboard and which brands to look out for when getting your next set of wheels to shred on. First, let's look at how a skateboard wheels is made.

They are usually made out of polyurethane, a durable and flexible type of plastic, which offers the ideal combination of durability, grip, and shock absorption required for skateboarding. The polyurethane mixture is injected or poured into metal molds, designed to give the wheels their desired shape and size. The filled molds are then heated to a specific temperature and pressure to cure the polyurethane mixture. This process helps the material solidify and take the shape of the mold.

Wheel size is something to consider when it comes to speed and tightness of turns. Skateboard wheels are measured in millimetres and can start from 50mm going up to 56mm or even up to 66mm if you’re looking for some longboard wheels. Larger skateboard wheels are good for higher speeds, so are great for vert skating, downhill or cruising. Smaller wheels are good for control and are more suitable for street skating.
