Santa Cruz x Pokémon - Two Cultures, One Collab
Santa Cruz has been making skateboard decks since 1973. Pokémon has been a fixture of youth culture since 1996. On the surface they look like an unlikely pairing, but the more you think about it, the more sense it makes.
Both built their audiences around collecting, creativity, and community. The kids who grew up trading holographic Charizards in the playground are the same generation who grew up pushing boards through car parks and watching skate videos after school. The overlap was always there. This collaboration just makes it official.
The Collection
The Santa Cruz x Pokémon TCG collab centres on a series of skateboard decks featuring original Pokémon Trading Card Game artwork — the same art that built decades of dedicated collectors. The decks are sold as blind bags, meaning you don't know which design you're getting until you open it. That mechanic will feel immediately familiar to anyone who has ever torn open a booster pack.
Beyond the decks, the collection extends into apparel: a range of tees and hoodies carrying three distinct graphic treatments drawn from the TCG — the TCG Hand, the Energy Dot, and the Power Dot. All pieces are officially licensed and made in Santa Cruz's standard midweight and heavyweight fleece cuts, built for wearing in and out of the park.
Why It Works
Skate culture and Pokémon culture share more DNA than most people realise.
Both reward the obsessive. Skaters know the feeling of spending months on a trick — the repetition, the slams, the eventual payoff. Pokémon players know the feeling of chasing a card through trade after trade. The patience and the grind are the same.
Both have their own visual language. Skate graphics have always leaned into bold, irreverent design — skulls, creatures, surrealist imagery. Pokémon's card art carries a similar aesthetic energy, particularly the older sets. Putting TCG card art on a Santa Cruz deck is not a stretch. It looks like it belongs there.
Both communities are tribal about their gear. The brand on your deck matters. The cards in your binder matter. This collab speaks directly to people who understand both.
And both have proven staying power across generations. The kids who started skating in the 90s still skate. The kids who collected Pokémon cards in the 90s are still collecting — and in many cases, have passed the habit on to their own children. The audience for this collection spans age groups in a way that most skate collaborations do not.
