Tips & Tricks for Winter Skateboarding, BMXing & Scootering

As we head into winter months, the cold weather brings with it rain, ice and even snow to impact our winter skateboarding, BMXing, and scootering. For some, this means staring longingly out of the window waiting for the weather to thaw, but others will be looking for ways to wrap up warm and still hit the ramps.

If you’re looking to BMX in winter or want to head out on your skateboard or scooter, there are various things to consider that may have an impact on your performance.

How can winter impact performance?

Winter weather can impact performance no matter what you’re riding due to the precautions you’ll have to take. Some performance issues can include:

Visibility

Vision will be reduced in the winter months as nights are longer and the dark creeps in during the early evening. There are also potential weather-related vision reducers, such as fog and snow. This can make it harder to see any obstacles or imperfections on the riding surface that you would otherwise be able to avoid.

Bulky clothing

The colder weather means needing to wear bulky winter clothing to stay warm. This can lead to restricted movement and make balancing and doing tricks a little harder.

Cold impacting personal performance

If you’re used to doing specific tricks or movements, you may find it a little harder during the winter months. Cold muscles won’t react in the same way that you’re used to!

Skateboarding in the winter

Winter weather can have a major impact on your skateboarding success and means that you could need to take some precautions to have a good session. Some things to look out for include:

  • Board strain – cold temperatures can make wood more brittle, so at lower temperatures there is a higher chance of the board getting damaged when performing tricks.
  • Wheel hardness – chilly weather can cause wheels to harden during winter skateboarding, which makes for a rougher ride as the wheels will offer reduced shock absorption.
  • Reduced traction – slippery surfaces can mean less grip, leading to unpredictable board behaviour and an increase in the risk of a potential accident.
  • Increased moisture – rain, snow and ice can leave puddles, which can be hazardous – especially when they are disguising potholes. Water can also seep into the board’s wood causing weakness and warping.

Riding BMX in the winter

Much like skateboarding, riding a BMX in the winter can be made a little harder by the colder weather. Things to consider when you head out include:

  • Reduced traction - wheels may struggle to gain traction on wet, icy, and snowy roads, meaning sharp turns might require you to slow down a little more than you are used to.
  • Potential for rust – if you’re hitting streets that might be used regularly by cars, your bike may have to battle against snow, slush, salt or even sand, which can cause rust and other damage to metal components.
  • Regular maintenance required – the winter weather can cause grime build-up on your brakes, chain, and bike body. Regular cleaning of these parts is important to ensure you don’t cause long-term damage.
  • Sluggish suspension – on a BMX, the suspension is everything and especially so if you’re trying to do tricks. Suspension systems can be a bit more sluggish in the cold, so you’re more likely to feel it when you land your latest feat.

Riding scooters in the winter

Riding a scooter in the winter is vastly different to riding a scooter in the summer. Whether you’re riding an electric scooter or a stunt scooter, you must take precautions in poor weather conditions.

  • Adjusting riding style – you’ll need to adjust how you ride a little in winter weather. Shorter pushes, more often, while swapping legs regularly can help you prepare for slippery patches.
  • Utilise mudguards where possible – for scooters with larger wheels, using a mudguard can be a terrific way to save yourself, and your scooter, from all of the debris from wet and muddy conditions.
  • Regular cleaning – in wet winter months, your scooter is likely to get dirtier than usual. Cleaning it regularly can ensure you prolong the life of your scooter.
  • Tyre grip is key – checking your tyres are suitable for the weather is a must do. Make sure tyres can handle the icy weather by ensuring they’re not worn down.
