The A–Z of Stunt Scooter Tricks

Becoming a pro stunt scooter rider doesn't just require skill. It requires knowledge too. Welcome to the A-Z of stunt scooter tricks, where every trick is ranked from beginner to expert. If you're just starting out on your stunt scooter, then the beginner tricks like bunny hops or fakies might be the best place to start. If you're pushing yourself to the next level and think you're ready to become an expert, then tricks like the backflip no hander might be what you're gunning for. Just remember to know your limits and only go for the tricks you know you can achieve!

Difficulty ratings: Beginner  ·  Intermediate  ·  Advanced  ·  Expert

A

Acid Drop  BEGINNER–INTERMEDIATE — Rolling off a ledge, step or ramp lip and landing back on the deck with both wheels touching down together — often the first drop-in trick riders learn.

Airwalk  INTERMEDIATE — In the air, kicking both feet out in opposite directions before bringing them back to the deck for landing.

Alley-oop  ADVANCED — An air spin taken backwards out of a ramp, rotating 180 degrees before landing.

B

Backflip  EXPERT — Rider and scooter rotate a full 360 degrees backwards together in the air. Needs real height, full commitment, and months of practice on foam pits or resi ramps first.

Backflip No-hander  EXPERT — A backflip performed with both hands off the bars and arms out to the sides for extra style.

Bank Transfer  INTERMEDIATE — Riding straight from one bank or ramp across to another without touching flat ground in between.

Bar Spin  INTERMEDIATE — Letting go of the bars mid-air and spinning them a full rotation before catching them again.

Barrel-roll  ADVANCED — A full sideways 360-degree rotation of the whole scooter and rider over one shoulder.

Bean Plant  ADVANCED — Planting one hand on a wall while the other hand and both feet keep hold of the scooter, usually on a transition ramp.

Benihana  INTERMEDIATE — Taking one foot off the deck mid-air and reaching down to grab it with the hand on the same side.

Boardslide  ADVANCED — Grinding along a rail or ledge on the underside of the deck while facing forward.

Body Varial  INTERMEDIATE — Jumping clear of the deck and spinning the body around while the scooter hangs beneath, before landing back on it.

Bri-flip  EXPERT — A signature flip combining elements of a scooter-flip and an X-up — a genuine test of flip-trick ability.

Bunny Hop  BEGINNER — The building block for almost everything else on this list. Bend the knees, pull up on the bars, and jump so both wheels leave the ground together.

Buttercup  EXPERT — A tailwhip into a bri-flip into another tailwhip, all in a single jump.

C

Cali Slider  INTERMEDIATE — Riding along flat ground while using the heel to lift the tail of the deck slightly and slide.

Can-Can  INTERMEDIATE — Swinging both legs off one side of the deck mid-air and holding the pose before bringing them back for landing.

Candybar  INTERMEDIATE — Swinging one foot over the handlebars mid-air before bringing it back to the deck.

Cannonball  ADVANCED — A no-footed grab where both hands hold the deck while the feet are off, mid-air.

Chairman  INTERMEDIATE — Riding while sitting on the handlebars, facing forward, with the feet hanging over the front wheel.

Cliffhanger  ADVANCED — A jump that leaves the scooter hanging below the rider's feet mid-air before it's brought back under control for landing.

Crooked Grind  ADVANCED — A grind with the tail of the deck angled away from the rail or ledge, so only the nose makes contact.

D

Decade  INTERMEDIATE — Spinning the body around the deck while keeping both hands on the bars.

Disaster  ADVANCED — Spinning 180 degrees to land facing back the way you came, briefly stalling the deck against the coping before riding away.

Double Peg Grind  ADVANCED — Grinding on the front and back peg on one side of the scooter along a rail or ledge.

E

Egg Plant  ADVANCED — A handplant-style stall on a quarter pipe — going upside down and planting one hand on the ramp or coping while keeping the scooter tucked under the feet, then dropping back in.

F

Fakie  BEGINNER — Riding backwards. It sounds basic, but confident fakie riding opens the door to dozens of spins and combo tricks.

Feeble Grind  ADVANCED — A grind where the front wheel rolls along the top of a rail or ledge while the tail of the deck slides beneath it.

Flair  EXPERT — A backflip with an added 180-degree spin, landing back into the ramp.

Foot Jam  ADVANCED — Jamming the front foot into the front wheel behind the forks to stall, then riding away.

Frontflip  EXPERT — A full forward rotation of rider and scooter together in the air.

Fufanu  ADVANCED — A stall facing out of a quarter pipe, balanced on the back wheel.

Full-Whip  ADVANCED — A tailwhip and a bar spin performed together in the same direction at the same time.

G

Grizzly  INTERMEDIATE — Tucking the bars into the waist and lifting one leg away from the deck while the scooter is held steady beneath — a style trick that clicks quickly once the balance is there.

H

Half-Cab  INTERMEDIATE — A 180-degree spin out of riding fakie, landing riding forwards.

Hang-5  INTERMEDIATE — Balancing on the deck with one foot while the other foot hangs off the side, riding on the front wheel.

Heelwhip  INTERMEDIATE — The tailwhip's mirror image — flicking the deck round with the heel instead of the toes, spinning it a full 360 degrees before catching it.

Hip Transfer  ADVANCED — Transferring from one ramp to another where the two ramps meet at an angle, known as a hip.

I

Icepick  ADVANCED — A grind-style stall balanced on the back peg of the scooter, usually performed on a ledge, rail, or ramp coping.

Indy Grab  INTERMEDIATE — Grabbing the deck on the frontside — the side the toes point to — mid-air.

Invert  EXPERT — Flipping the whole scooter upside down mid-air, similar to a tabletop but taken further.

J

Japan  ADVANCED — A grab trick borrowed from skateboarding — reaching forward to grab the nose of the deck with the front hand while bending the knees so the scooter tucks in behind the rider.

K

Krippleflip  EXPERT — One of the rarer, more inventive tricks around — the scooter flips backwards between the rider's legs with both hands off the bars, then gets caught with feet landing back on the deck.

L

Legsweep  INTERMEDIATE — Sweeping one leg around the front of the scooter while the other foot stays on the deck, mid-air.

Lookback  ADVANCED — A frontside turndown where the deck is kicked out and the bars turned so the rider appears to look back into the ramp just before landing.

M

Manual  BEGINNER — Riding on the back wheel only, weight shifted toward the tail of the deck — the scooter equivalent of a wheelie.

Mute Grab  INTERMEDIATE — Grabbing the deck on the backside with the hand opposite the nearest foot, while in a tabletop position.

N

Nac-Nac  INTERMEDIATE — Tweaking the deck out to the side while stretching the back foot out behind the rider, mid-air.

No-Footer  INTERMEDIATE — Both feet come off the deck mid-air while the rider keeps hold of the bars, before feet return to the deck for landing.

Nose Grind  ADVANCED — Grinding using only the front peg along a rail or ledge.

Nothing  EXPERT — Taking both hands and both feet off the scooter mid-air, then getting everything back in place before landing.

O

One-Footed Invert  EXPERT — A fully inverted air trick — the scooter flipped upside down above the rider — performed with one foot off the deck for extra style and difficulty.

Over Grab  ADVANCED — Reaching one hand over the front of the deck to grab it from the far side.

P

Pivot  INTERMEDIATE — Lifting one wheel off the ground and spinning around the other to change direction — often the start of a 360.

Pogo  ADVANCED — Tucking the bars into the waist, hooking the front leg under the deck, and hopping along on just the back wheel with the back foot resting on the brake.

Pole-Tap  INTERMEDIATE — Jumping toward a vertical obstacle such as a pole so the tail of the deck taps against it mid-air.

Powerslide  INTERMEDIATE — Sliding the back wheel out while still rolling forward on the front wheel.

Q

Quarterpipe Air  BEGINNER–INTERMEDIATE — Riding up and out of the lip of a quarter pipe to get airborne before dropping back in — the foundation for every other air trick on a ramp.

R

Rail-Ride  ADVANCED — Riding along the top of a rail with both wheels, parallel to the rail.

Rewind  ADVANCED — A tailwhip (or heelwhip) kicked one way, then caught and sent back the other way mid-rotation, so the deck reverses direction before landing.

Rodeo Flip  EXPERT — A frontflip with an added 360-degree spin.

S

Scooter-Flip  ADVANCED — Letting go of one bar and flipping the whole scooter forward and back under the feet.

Smith Grind  ADVANCED — Grinding with the back wheel on the rail or ledge while the front wheel hangs off the edge.

Stalefish Grab  ADVANCED — Reaching the back hand behind the legs to grab the deck near the heels.

Suicide No-Hander  ADVANCED — Taking both hands off the bars without tucking the steering tube between the knees for support.

Superman  ADVANCED — Both legs extend fully off the back of the deck while the rider holds the scooter out in front with just their hands — one of the most recognisable big-air style tricks.

T

Table-Top  INTERMEDIATE — Turning the bars and leaning the scooter flat to one side mid-air, like the top of a table.

Tailwhip  INTERMEDIATE — The trick that built the sport — jumping, kicking the deck away with the feet, and letting it spin a full 360 degrees before catching it and landing.

Toboggan  ADVANCED — Grabbing the back wheel while pointing the front of the scooter down and turning the bars sideways.

Truck Driver  ADVANCED — Performing a bar spin during the rotation of a 360.

Tuck No-Hander  INTERMEDIATE — Tucking the steering tube between the knees and extending both arms out to the sides mid-air.

Turndown  INTERMEDIATE — Kicking the deck out and turning the bars down without crossing the hands.

U

Umbrella Flip  EXPERT — The bars rotate like in a bri-flip while the deck is kicked out and flipped up and over the rider's head sideways — a combination flip needing serious flip-trick experience.

Unturndown  ADVANCED — Similar to a turndown, but the bars stay perpendicular to the deck throughout.

V

No trick names start with V yet — one of the genuine gaps in the scooter trick book. Land one and it's yours to name.

W

Wallride  ADVANCED — Approaching a wall from flat ground or a ramp and leaning into it so both wheels roll along the wall's surface, before jumping back off.

Wall Plant  ADVANCED — Planting a foot on a wall while the scooter is airborne beneath the rider.

Whiplash  ADVANCED — Rotating the deck around while in a foot-jam position with neither foot on the deck.

X

X-Up  INTERMEDIATE–ADVANCED — Mid-air, crossing the arms to twist the bars 180 degrees without letting go, then uncrossing them to straighten up before landing.

X-Ride  ADVANCED — Riding with the bars turned toward the deck while the arms are crossed in an X shape without letting go.

Y & Z

Same story as V — no established scooter tricks start with Y or Z. If that changes, we'll be the first to add them.

Bonus: spins by the numbers

Not every trick fits the alphabet — a lot of scooter spins are named by how many degrees they rotate.

180  BEGINNER — A half spin, often thrown into an air trick or ridden out to or from fakie.

360  INTERMEDIATE — A full spin — often just called a 'three'.

540  ADVANCED — A spin and a half — often called a 'five'.

720  EXPERT — Two full spins — often called a 'seven'.

900  EXPERT — Two and a half full spins.

1080  EXPERT — Three full spins — reserved for the very top level of riders.
